A Day (Or Two) at a Summer Wonderland
I’ve attended Penang Anime Matsuri 2017 Summer Wonderland last weekend. First and foremost sorry for the lateness in my photo post-processing for the past few days, for those looking forward (And expressed interests in…) to my event photos… I’ve finally managed to upload them all onto my Flickr yesterday. ^_^
It’s an extremely exhausting experience, what with my now slowly decaying physiques and years, I find myself no longer as enthusiastic as earlier years, even though the new site is a double thumbs-up for me.
It’s not easy being a Wizard. XDc
The new site at Spice Arena, a former mini stadium now redecorated for events, is much more comfortable when compared to past PAMs at Dewan Sri Pinang.
The enclosed space allows better air-conditioning (You could actually feel the chill in your bones even if the hall is packed with visitors, unlike past venue’s scorching hotness) as well as a more convention-like appeal ala Anime Festival Asia in Singapore (Co-Organised by the same team behind AFA too if you don’t know www).
A pretty huge line already on Day 1, on both the ticketing booths and the queue for entry.
A brief walk through a narrow corridor leads to the site itself. Unlike bigger events though, the crowd is pretty chilled and nonchalantly walks into the event hall, no crazy Zerg-rushing and all. XDc
Inside the hall, there are a couple of display booths: a panel showcasing John Hathway’s beautiful illustrations, as well as Sacra Music’s promotional counter displaying info of artistes under their wing, including Claris, Kalafina and HanaKana, just to name a few…
AFA Shop is where all the actions are for the two days at PAM17.
Selling merchandise of various artistes and guests, a majority of the attending crowd throng the place at every time, looking forward to guest appearances and autograph sessions… ^_~
As always, there’s a TCG booth allowing card battlers to duel against one another, with tournament and training sessions in the span of the event.
The featured TCG this time is Battle Spirits.
While not officially a Bandai booth, a local hobby merchant setup a Gunpla sales booth at the event.
They even had several of their own Gunpla works on display, a few of them are actually winning entries of various contests.
Ito Yuichi of BELCORNO expressing his talent in latte art by doing various commissioned chara art on the spot during the two days… for a price of course.
He even have a session on the stage in one of the days. ^_^
The stage area, located just next to the exhibition area. The same place turned into concert hall during the two nights. w
Didn’t actually visited the stage area much except for a watch of an anime movie on Day 2. ^^;
A random selection of all the booths in the exhibition area, which include commercial and doujin booths, as well as food stalls at the other end of the hall.
Tama-chan paid a visit to one of the doujin booths, where she spent a majority of her Day 1 at with her fellow Doll Furenzu.
She was absent for Day 2 as she was worn out for the day, sending her imouto plushie in her stead. w
Aside from AFA Shop, the Canon booth was where all the rest of the actions were. Cosplayers and random con-goers alike visited the booth for photo sessions and prints. I too had a trio of photos taken on Day 2. Will show the result at the end of this post along with other acquisitions. w
They also have a collaboration with Pokémon it seem, as there was this gigantic Pikachu kigurumi appearances at the booth as well.
Similar to the former, the latter too have guest appearances and autograph sessions. Tama-chan managed to get a two-shot with Ying Tze once again. Many thanks to her and the crew for allowing a brief queue-cut. XDc
Speaking of cosplayers, I didn’t really went on a hunt during the two days, only capturing random encounters into my lens.
Many photos were discarded due to bad lightings and out-of-focus failures, a norm in event photography… =_=
That’s all for my Summer Wonderland report.
I did grabbed several stuff during the course of the event: A T-shirt from Tomodachi featuring Kemono Friends spoof, a Gunpla, Ying Tze’s photo book (Actually belongs to a certain Sandtrooper… I’m just acting as a proxy www) and some photos taken at the Canon booth with Tama-chan plushie. XDc
I do pray for PAM to grow larger with more invited guests from the ACG industry instead of just celebrity cosplayers. May’n for the concert this year gave me hope for the upcoming years.
Tsk tsk, Jason Sim. Tsk tsk, SOZO. www
My next visit to a major anime event will be AFA17 at the end of the year. See you all there!
